Firearms

Modern Firearms

Modern firearms are electronic: rather than a firing pin striking a primer to ignite the propellant, an electric current is used to ignite it. This means fewer moving parts, making modern firearms more reliable. These firearms include a button cell battery, which is also used to power smartlink systems.

Modern firearms also use caseless cartridges, allowing them to pack more ammunition into a magazine of similar size to older firearms. In practice, modern caseless ammunition uses external propellant: usually, the bullet is embedded in a block of propellant.

Caseless shotgun ammunition simply embeds the shot, slug, or flechettes in a large block of propellant.

Liquid Propellant

Smartlinked firearms may use liquid propellant instead of embedding the bullet in a propellant block: an extremely precisely-engineered system injects propellant into the chamber and an electric current ignites it. These guns, controlled through cyberlink, can vary the amount of propellant, allowing them to fire underpressure or overpressure shots on the fly.

Flechette Guns

Flechette guns, also called "needlers" or "sliverguns," shoot tiny projectiles resembling small nails, often fin-stabilized. These flechettes may be embedded in propellant blocks, or the firearm may use liquid propellant. These guns are comparatively very light and capable of extreme rates of fire. While solid flechettes are not extremely destructive projectiles, flechettes come in many types: they may deliver fast-acting toxins, or may even be made with—or of!—explosive materials.

Electrothermal-Chemical (ETC) Guns

Modern military weapons, including small arms, use electrothermal-chemical (ETC) technology: an electrically-ignited plasma cartridge ignites the propellant, rather than a primer. This ammunition is not caseless—the cartridge has a casing containing the propellant, with the plasma cartridge at the base. The result is higher muzzle velocity.

In addition, military small arms generally use armor-piercing saboted rounds: hard penetrators contained in a sabot. The increased armor penetration makes them much deadlier in the battlefield.
