Spellsinger (Campaign Class)

Prime Requisite: INT and CHA
Requirements: None
Hit Dice: 1d4
Maximum Level: 14

Some rare humans have learned the elven art of spellsinging, wielding powerful magic in a flexible way. Humans are not as skillful at this art as elves, but spellsingers are nonetheless formidable adventurers.

Spellsingers advance in attack throws and saving throws as mages, by two points every six levels of experience. At first level, elven spellsingers hit an unarmored foe (AC 0) with an attack throw of 10+. They are trained to fight with clubs, daggers, darts, and staves, and can fight wielding a weapon two-handed. They cannot wear armor or use shields. Spellsingers can use magic items usable by mages and thieves.

Spellsingers can learn and cast arcane spells and engage in magic research as mages of 2/3 their level. They can research spells, scribe magical scrolls, and brew potions starting at 7th level, and can create more powerful magic items such as weapons, rings, and staffs starting at 13th level. They may not learn and cast ritual spells, craft magical constructs, or create magical cross-breeds or undead.

Spellsingers cast their spells by spellsinging, reciting words of power with rhythm and melody. Spellsingers perform magic by spending spell points (SP) rather than by expending daily spell slots. Each spell costs a certain number of spell points to sing (see the Spell Point Costs below). Spellsingers recover their spell points in the same way spellcasters recover their daily spell castings, by spending eight hours resting without interruption and one hour concentrating on study, once every 24 hours. Spellsingers can cast spells that are not in their repertoire by extemporaneously singing spells. See Heroic Magic in Heroic Fantasy for details on spellsinging.

Upon reaching 9th level (Singer of Mysteries), a spellsinger can build a conservatory. He will then attract 1d6 apprentices of 1st – 3rd level plus 2d6 men and women seeking to become spellsingers. Their Intelligence and Charisma scores will be above average, but many will become discouraged from the rigorous mental training and quit after 1d6 months. While in the spellsinger's service, apprentices must be provided food and lodging, but need not be paid wages. If the spellsinger builds a dungeon beneath or near his conservatory, monsters will start to arrive to dwell within, followed shortly by adventurers seeking to fight them.
