Sorlyn (Campaign Class)

Prime Requisite: WIS and CHA
Requirements: None
Hit Dice: 1d6
Maximum Level: 14

The Sorlyn are the clerics of Milil, Lord of All Songs, the One True Hand of Oghma. Not merely clergy, they are all artists: passionate musicians, devoted to the art and craft of song and performance. Their churches and temples train and patron artists, often operating both as performance halls and conservatories.

Sorlyn advance in attack throws and saving throws by two points every four levels of experience. At first level, sorlyn hit an unarmored foe (AC 0) with an attack throw of 10+. They are trained to fight using all flails, hammers, and maces, as well as bolas, darts, nets, slings, saps, and staffs, and can fight using a weapon and shield or wielding a weapon two-handed. They can wear armor up to chain mail. Sorlyn can use magic items usable by clerics.

Starting at 2nd level (Chanter), sorlyn may cast divine spells. They cannot turn undead. When a sorlyn reaches 5th level (Sorlyn), he may begin to research spells, scribe scrolls, and brew potions as a cleric. At 9th level (Master of Songs), he is able to create more powerful magic items such as weapons, rings, and staffs. At 11th level, a sorlyn may learn and cast rituals spells of great power (6th and 7th level), and craft magical constructs such as golems and animated statues.

Sorlyn follow a code of conduct: they must make the world more beautiful, sing to Milil each day, never stop joyously made music, never destroy an instrument of music, and always seek out new music, songs, techniques, and instruments.

Sorlyn cast their spells by spellsinging, reciting words of power with rhythm and melody. Spellsingers perform magic by spending spell points (SP) rather than by expending daily spell slots. Each spell costs a certain number of spell points to sing (see the Spell Point Costs below). Spellsingers recover their spell points in the same way spellcasters recover their daily spell castings, by spending eight hours resting without interruption and one hour concentrating on study, once every 24 hours. Spellsingers can cast spells that are not in their repertoire by extemporaneously singing spells. See Heroic Magic in Heroic Fantasy for details on spellsinging.

Sorlyn are well-versed in the art of singing, possessing one rank of Performance (singing) from 1st level.

Upon attaining 9th level (Master of Songs), a sorlyn may establish or build a conservatory. So long as the sorlyn is currently in favor with his order, he may buy or build his conservatory at half the normal price due to the help of fervent worshippers. Once a conservatory is established, the sorlyn's reputation will spread and he will attract 5d6×10 0th level soldiers armed with various weapons, plus another 1d6 sorlyns of 1st – 3rd level of the same religion to serve the order. They are completely loyal (morale +4). While in the sorlyn's service, his followers must be provided food and lodging, but need not be paid wages. The Judge determines which proportions of followers are archers, infantry, etc.
