Priestess (Campaign Class)

Prime Requisite: WIS and CHA
Requirements: None
Hit Dice: 1d4
Maximum Level: 14

This is the ACKS Priestess class from the Player's Companion, refitted for the Forgotten Realms campaign.

Priestesses are servants of Chauntea, goddess of earth and fertility. They are found across Faerûn, usually alongside the clerics of Lathander—the earth and the sun are commonly worshipped side-by-side, as one church. The faith is the most popular one in Faerûn, especially in rural areas, and is reputedly the world's oldest church.

Priestesses advance in saving throws as clerics, by two points every four levels of experience, and in attack throws as mages, by two points every six levels of experience. At first level, priestesses hit an unarmored foe (AC 0) with an attack throw of 10+. They are trained to fight with clubs, daggers, darts, and staves, and can fight wielding a weapon two-handed. They cannot wear armor or use shields. Priestesses can use magic items usable by clerics.

Starting at 1st level (Novice), priestesses may cast divine spells as standard clerics. They have the ability to turn undead, just as standard clerics. When a priestess reaches 5th level (Sister-Disciple), she may begin to research spells, scribe scrolls, and brew potions as a cleric. At 9th level (Matriarch), she is able to create more powerful magic items such as weapons, rings, and staffs. At 11th level, a priestess may learn and cast rituals spells of great power (6th and 7th level), and craft magical constructs such as golems and animated statues.

Priestesses must uphold the strictures of their order. In public, they must wear the shawls and vestments that identify them as members of the faith—white, brown, yellow, or golden, trimmed with green, according to their rank. They must make prayers to Chauntea at dawn and dusk. They must refrain from the taking of human or demi-human life. Many other, smaller strictures govern the minutiae of their lives, particularly in cloisters and temples.

Upon attaining 9th level (Matriarch), a priestess may establish or build a stronghold called a cloister. If the priestess has had a good and noble adventuring career, the matriarch of her current cloister will pay for up to 100% of the construction costs of a modest cloister. The new cloister will usually remain a branch of the older cloister until the priestess reaches 12th level, at which time it will become independent. A priestess who founds a cloister will be joined by 1d2×10 1st level priestesses and 1d6×30 normal women who want to become priestesses. Every year 80% of the previous year's trainees will leave in frustration or find they lack the discipline for a life of faith, and 1d6×20 normal women will come in to replace them. A normal woman in training typically takes 2 years to become a 1st level priestess.
