Battlepriests serve Tempus, the Lord of Battles. Their order is dedicated to war and battle, and the battlepriests hire themselves out to mercenary companies, and are occasionally commissioned by lords and nobles into their standing militaries. Battlepriests are sometimes seen as warmongers, too eager to see people come to strife and blows for the glory of their god, and even as profiteering from war.
Battlepriests advance in attack throws and saving throws as fighters, by two points every three levels of experience. At first level, battlepriests hit an unarmored foe (AC 0) with an attack throw of 10+. Masters of war, battlepriests are trained to fight using any and all weapons, and can fight using a weapon and shield, a weapon in each hand, or wielding a weapon two-handed. They can wear any armor. Battlepriests can use magic items usable by fighters. Battlepriests increase their base damage roll from melee and missile attacks by +1 at 1st level and by an additional +1 at 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th level.
Starting at 3rd level (Swordbrother), a battlepriest can cast divine spells as a cleric of ½ his class level (rounded up). Starting at 10th level, they may research spells, scribe scrolls, and brew potions. They may not create more powerful magic items, learn and cast ritual divine spells, or craft magical constructs. Battlepriests cannot turn undead.
Battlepriests are expected to obey their order's code of conduct: they must be at the forefront of battle, acquit themselves boldly, and to identify themselves proudly as followers of Tempus. They are not strictly forbidden from retreating or employing ambush and other trickery, but it is frowned upon. Those who violate this code and fail to make amends may be expelled from the order.
A battlepriest can inspire courage in troops and allies. This requires a few moments of oration before a battle (one round), and grants the character's allies within a 50' radius a +1 bonus to attack throws, damage rolls, morale rolls (for monsters or NPCs allied with the caster), and saving throws against magical fear. The bonus lasts for 10 minutes (1 turn). The character can inspire courage in any given character once per day per class level. The battlepriest cannot inspire courage on characters who are already engaged in combat.
Starting at 5th level (Battleguard), the battlepriests battlefield prowess is such that any henchmen and mercenaries hired by the character gain a +1 bonus to their morale score whenever he personally reads them.
At 9th level (High Warpriest), a battlepriest can found or capture a fortress and become a leader of warriors. When he does so, up to 1d4+1×10 0th level mercenaries and 1d6 battlepriests of 1st – 3rd level will come to apply for jobs and training. If hired, they must be paid standard rates for mercenaries. Battlepriests' fortresses are otherwise identical to fighters' castles, as detailed in the Campaign chapter of the ACKS Rulebook.
