While dwarves may have a greater affinity for mechanisms and devices, they cannot match gnomes for sheer invention. Thus, gnomes make excellent machinists. Some may learn the craft by living near or among dwarves, while others come from a gnomish tradition of invention—or may even be mavericks who invented the craft for themselves.
Gnomish artificers advance in attack and saving throws as thieves, by two points every four levels of experience. At first level, artificers hit an unarmored foe (AC 0) with an attack throw of 10+. Gnomish artificers may wield arbalests, crossbows, daggers, hand axes, maces, and war hammers. They may fight with a weapon and shield or wielding a weapon two-handed. They cannot wear armor heavier than leather. Artificers may use magic items usable by thieves.
Gnomish artificers are master craftsmen in one particular craft (such as clock-making, jewelling, armor- or weaponsmithing, etc.). With access to craftsman's stools, they can produce 40gp worth of items per month, and supervise 2 journeymen and 3 apprentices in the craft. They can also identify masterwork items, rare materials, and famous artisans with a proficiency throw of 3+.
Gnomish artificers can open locks and find/remove traps as a thief of the same level. Gnomish artificers can also detect traps, false walls, hidden construction, and notice if passages are sloped with a proficiency throw of 14+ on 1d20. They must be actively searching for this ability to function.
Gnomish artificers can design, build, and repair automatons as a dwarven machinist, except that their natural talent for inventing allows them to design automatons as if they were two class levels higher, and the time they require to design automatons is reduced by 20%.
The gnomish penchant for trickery leaves gnomes resistant to illusions made by others. They receive a +4 bonus on saving throws to disbelieve magical illusions. Gnomes have a nose for potions. They may make a proficiency throw of 11+ to determine the magical properties of a potion or oil on taste. Starting at 5th level, gnomish artificers may brew potions as mages of their class level. The gnomish tendency to underground life has granted them extended infravision to 90'. Gnomish characters speak the Common and Gnome tongue, and can also speak the tongues of Dwarves, Elves, Goblins, and Kobolds.
When a gnomish artificer reaches 9th level (Master Artificer), he can establish a manufactory and begin training apprentices. He will then attract 1d6 apprentice artificers of 1st – 3rd level plus 2d6 gnomes seeking to become artificers. Their Intelligence and Dexterity scores will be above average, but many will find they lack the talent and quit after 1d6 months. Apprentices function like assistants in magical research (see ACKS p. 119). While in the gnomish artificer's service, apprentices must be provided food and lodging, but need not be paid wages. If the gnomish artificer builds a dungeon beneath or near his manufactory, monsters will start to arrive to dwell within. These are often used to test new automatons. Artificers' manufactories are otherwise identical to mages' sanctums, as detailed in the Campaign chapter of the ACKS Rulebook.
