Elves are often credited with the invention of arcane magic, and teaching it to humans. True or not, it is undeniable that many elves have a great facility with magic, whether through natural talent or the fact their long lives allow them more time to study it. Those elves who dedicate themselves wholly to the arcane arts are formidable magicians indeed.
Elven mages advance in attack throws and saving throws by two points every six levels of experience. At first level, elven mages hit an unarmored foe (AC 0) with an attack throw of 10+. They are trained to fight with clubs, daggers, darts, and staves, and can fight wielding a weapon two-handed. They cannot wear armor or use shields. Elven mages can use magic items usable by mages.
Elven mages can learn and cast arcane spells and engage in magic research exactly as mages of their level (although their number of spells per day is higher).
Elves gain a +1 bonus to surprise rolls when in the wilderness due to their attunement to nature. Elves have keen eyes that allow them to detect hidden and secret doors with a proficiency throw of 8+ when actively searching, or 14+ on casual inspection. Because of their connection to nature, elves are completely unaffected by the paralysis ghouls can inflict, and the target values for all their saving throws versus Petrification/Paralysis and Spells are reduced by 1. Elves can speak the Common, Elven, Gnoll, Hobgoblin, and Orc languages.
At 9th level (Elven High Mage), an elven mage can build a sanctum, usually a tower. He will then attract 1d6 elven apprentices of 1st – 3rd level plus 2d6 elves seeking to become elven mages. Their Intelligence scores will be above average, but many will become discouraged from the rigorous mental training and quit after 1d6 months. While in the mage's service, apprentices must be provided food and lodging, but need not be paid wages. If the elven mage builds a dungeon beneath or near his tower, monsters will start to arrive to dwell within, followed shortly by adventurers seeking to fight them.
